Worth a Taste

On July 12th, 2006, I remember sitting at a rickety desk in downtown, bored out of my mind tuning out some guy going on and on about liber and folio at my internship at Solidaire when we heard the news. In retaliation to two Israeli soldiers being kidnapped by Hizbullah and taken into Lebanon in an anti-tank missile attack on two Humvees patrolling the Lebanese-Israeli border, Israel began firing rockets into Southern Lebanon. At first, we weren’t really shaken, if you’ve lived in Lebanon long enough, you learn not to get anxious about the little things. On the afternoon of July 12th, this was still just a little thing. Until it wasn’t.

Thirty four days, 11,897 combat missions, 170,000 fired shells, 73 fallen bridges, 25 blown up fuel stations, 900 leveled commercial structures, 350 targeted schools, 2 demolished hospitals, 640km of damaged roads (including airport runways, water and sewage treatment plants, electrical facilities, and ports)…
